Based around the original score by Giacomo Antonio Domenico Michele Secondo Maria Puccini and with an inspiring introduction of traditional Japanese music, the performance perfectly translates the story.    The powerful imagery of the opening scene and hypnotizing choreography wrap their fingers around your heart and lift you to another era and place.

As we sat, it was clear that the detail of the interpretation was as near perfection as could be brushed in any art form.  Not a moment was left empty of meaning and not a colour missed.

The dancers themselves are clearly absorbed in the joy of the production and their movement in celebration almost inciting the audience to dance and in the moments of trajedy brought a tear to many an eye in the auditorium of The Grand Theatre – what I would say is a marvelous venue for this masterpiece.

I know the story and have seen this production before, several years ago but it was the first time for our Sudanese student to ever see a ballet or hear the name ‘Madam Butterfly’.  The fact that he could interpret the entire performance is irrefutable evidence that the Northern Ballet is able to beautifully recreate a story.   His response at the end was that it was truly wonderful…and he would be happy to see it again immediately!

It is my humble but sure recommendation that anyone with an interest in culture and ballet see a production by this company and if at all possible, make Madam Butterfly a must.

From the 23rd the 26th May will be the production of I Got Rhythm.  This also promises to be a great show and another facet of the company’s repertoire.
